A few products do not have a marketing authorisation (licence) as a medicine and therefore there is no PIL. Although children are usually given the chicken pox vaccine, if your child is receiving high-dose steroids we recommend siblings or other close family members have it.

Oral steroids

Due to the risks involved in detoxing from alcohol and codeine, inpatient detoxification is the safest method. In cases where there is co-occurring use of codeine and alcohol, withdrawal can be extremely uncomfortable and dangerous if attempted at home. You should have regular blood pressure checks while you are taking steroids – ask your medical team for advice. Myopathy is more common with higher-dose steroids taken over a long time. Because anabolic steroids can make you feel paranoid, aggressive and violent for no reason, it’s not that unusual for anabolic steroid users to lash out or attack family and friends.

Drugs and driving: the law

There are two main groups of natural steroids – anabolic steroids and corticosteroids. It is the anabolic steroids that tend to be misused, mainly because they are similar to the male hormone testosterone and they can improve endurance and performance and stimulate muscle growth. Your child needs to be closely monitored while on steroid treatment, which may include checking their weight, blood pressure and urine. Your GP surgery, local hospital or local community nurses will usually run these check ups.

Very strong topical steroids aren’t usually prescribed during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you’re having an operation, you might need to stop your steroids. Don’t do this without speaking to your doctor or surgeon first though, as in some cases you might be able to carry on taking them, and you may need to have your dose changed before the operation. Sometimes steroids can cause another condition known as Cushing’s syndrome.
